Press Release 08 March 2010
The Eastern Regional Fisheries Board has investigated a fish kill which occurred on 28th February in Peter’s Lake in Monaghan Town. 60 dead coarse fish were found most of which were juveniles, species included bream, tench and rudd.
This incident was caused by a blockage in a pipe which runs past Peter’s Lake. This in turn had led to a lack of oxygen in the water which caused the fish kill. By Monday 1st March the blockage had been located and cleared. Monaghan County Council inserted oxygen diffusers across the lake in conjunction with the fountains in order to ensure that extra oxygen was introduced to the water to counteract the deficiency. This resulted in significant improvement in conditions in the lake and there have been no further signs of distressed fish or mortalities since.
The lake will continue to be closely monitored by the Board. Peter’s Lake is a valuable coarse angling facility in Monaghan town providing recreational opportunities for both domestic and visiting anglers.
