Angling Report

Sea Fishing

Mackerel Fishing

Mackerel are being caught from Howth pier, Dun Laoghaire pier and Bullock harbour and Wicklow pier. Fish are being taken on feather and German sprats. Best to fish the incoming tide.

Bass fishing

Angler should note that it is now the closed season for bass fishing and the closed season is from the 15th May to 15th June. This is a conservation measure to allow the fish to spawn.

Sea Trout

Anglers fishing for sea trout will need a state licence whether they are fishing fresh or sea water. Licences can be purchased from your tackle dealer.

Mullet Fishing

Mullet are beginning to turn up in the harbours and estuaries on the East coast – early morning sessions can be good. Float fish bread on the surface.

Greystones South Beach

Greystones south beach has been producing dog fish, small plaice, flounder and dabs. Long distance casting may be required for plaice, long snoods size one and two camasin hooks, best bait are rag, crab and sand eel.

Ennereilly Beach

Some smooth hound pups between 30-45cm have been caught in recent days. The beach is also producing dogs. Anglers fishing with sand eel and fresh mackerel are also in with a chance to catch thorn back ray between 7-10lb from Ennareilly and Arklow beach.

Blackwater Beach

Plenty of small flounder, dog fish, some smooth hound pups (30-50 cm) and occasional ray.
Species hunters may be interested to know small guilt head bream can turn up on these beaches from now on. Crab and rag woom are best baits with small hooks.

Tinnebearna Beach

Big smooth hounds patrol this venue from May to July. Best fishing is at night using peler crab – long distance casting will pay off at this venue – good tip – study the sand banks.

Pike & Coarse Fishing

Ballyhoe Lakes

Fishing well for tench and pike, anglers have been having good pike angling from the shore catching fish on dead bait and small rapella lures. An 8lb fish, two low doubles and an 18lb fish were reported last week by a visiting angler. Tench –to 5 & 6lb have been caught by anglers feeder fishing, hook bait – maggots and small strawberry flavoured boilies.

Rathans Lake

Has not fished well in the last week, with just a small number of small pike been caught on lures by boat anglers.

Lough Muckno – Castleblaney

Lough Muckno has been fishing very well with good numbers of pike being caught. Last week four anglers in two boats recorded good numbers of fish to 14lb in weight, best method was lure fishing. Coarse fishing from white island continues to be average , anglers are still catching roach, feeder fishing, hook bait maggot.

Brothers Lake – Carrickmacross

Fishing very well for tench roach and perch. Maggot feeder fished over a bed of breadcrumbs and hemp, hook bait maggot, waggler will also work well.

Descart Lake – Kingscourt

Fishing well for tench up to 5lb in weight, hook bait maggot.

Royal Canal

Vinny McConnell had good fishing on the canal at Kilcock by fishing waggler and 3lbs straight through and size 14 hooks with double maggot as bait. He had a nice bag of small bream, roach and a few tench and was fishing daylight hours into dusk. Vinny was using light breadcrumb mix with hemp and worm additive as ground bait.

Corkagh Park Fishery

There has been some exceptional catching at Corkagh park in recent days. Adam Craig fishing with maggot under a waggler had a 10lb 9oz bream. Vincent Jackson had two carp weighting 6lb and 8lb on a carp pellet (krazy krill) fished on bottom. Al Walsh had five carp this week on one session best fish 8lb 7oz – all on surface floating dog biscuit. Harry Kilpatrick had seven carp – all on the pole (20 hydo elastic), using size 12 barbless hook and four maggots as hook bait.

Corkagh Park Fishery

Dave Mack from Castleisland County Kerry had an phenomenal days fishing during the week, he had nine rainbows, 2 fish weighed over 7lb, 2 over 8.5lb and one fish weighing 18lb. He fished an intermediate line with a rod length leader using traditional patterns.

Annamoe Trout Fishery

Annamoe has been fishing well recently with some very good trout up to 6lbs in weight being caught, anglers are having great sport using floating lines, long leaders and small dry flies.
