ANNAMOE HOSTS THE GRAND FINAL OF THE SCIERRA WINTER LEAGUE

The Grand Final of the Scierra Winter League took place on Saturday, 9th December at Annamoe Trout Fishery, Annamoe Co. Wicklow. The sun was shining for the final but temperatures were cool and water temperatures were only 6 degrees. The top 20 anglers from the 5 qualifying heats took to their pegs at 10.00am and fished for 4 hours in an effort to win the coveted first prize of a season fly-fishing ticket for the Fishery and a generous Christmas hamper.

The competition was not going to be easy as the fish were unsettled and slow to feed. This was probably due to the cool water and the presence of two well fed cormorants. During the 4 hour competition, 14 trout were hooked but only 7 were landed. However, by the end of the day, 24 rainbows in total were caught and returned safety. The largest fish caught was 2.5kg. The most successful flies were Cats whisker, Dawsons olive, orange zonker and black buzzers all on sink tip lines.

At 2pm, all anglers returned to the warm cabin and were treated to soup and sandwiches. The prizegiving followed and Hazel Dobbyn, Marketing Co-ordinator with the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board presented the fantastic array of prizes supplied by Brian Nally of Annamoe Trout Fishery. First prize went to Paul Philpott of New Ross, Co Wexford with 2 trout. Paul was accompanied on the day by his son, Sean, who was only too happy to help his Dad land 2 fish. Second place went to David Rowan from Naas, Co Kildare also with 2 fish and third place went to local angler Robbie Scott from Roundwood, Co. Wicklow with a nice 1.5kg trout.

A re-stocking of the fly-fishing lake will take place this week before Christmas as the Fishery will remain open every day over the Christmas period except Christmas Day when Brian will be taking a well-earned rest!
