Notice

This event has been completely booked out. A further day will be organised in August. Details to follow.

Ladies, are you stressed out? Are you in need of a fun hobby that offers relaxation, fresh air and stunning scenery?

The Slaney River Trust in conjunction with the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board is offering you the opportunity of a lifetime to learn to fly fish from the best female instructor not only in Ireland but in Europe. Glenda Powell is the only female in Ireland and Europe to hold the top casting qualification.

This one day introductory course in aid of Action Breast Cancer is a Ladies Only event aimed at beginners and spaces are limited to a maximum of 16 participants. The course will consist of casting theory and practice and fly casting with one to one supervision from Glenda. For the second half of the day, the skills you have learnt will be used to catch a rainbow trout on the beautiful fly-fishing lake in Annamoe Fishery, Co Wicklow.
All fishing gear will be provided on the day and each participant will be presented with a gift of some beautiful Irish trout flies so you can continue to practice after the course.

Glenda Powell fly fishing

Glenda is a well respected instructor and fly-fisher and runs the Blackwater Lodge Fishery in Cork with her husband, Ian. Glenda’s uncle was the reason she became interested in fishing. She was only nine years old when he died and he left all his fishing tackle to her. To her sisters’ amazement and other boy’s her age, she decided to teach herself to fish and over the years, her steely determination has resulted in her becoming the first female fly-casting instructor to achieve the APGAI accreditation.

Like many women who work in a male dominated arena, Glenda has had to work exceptionally hard to be accepted by her peers and to reach the top of her game. ‘Not withstanding, a woman doesn’t have the right to make a mistake. Much more than a man, she must strive for excellence to remain credible’.

Perhaps, like Glenda, you watched your uncle, father or grandfather fly-fish as a little girl and wondered what it was like or why it was such a fascination for him. This introductory course is the perfect opportunity to discover why fly-fishing is so special, to learn from one of the best instructors and above all to have fun! – We promise you will end up hooked!
