ANGLERS BRAVE THE COLD WEATHER FOR THE FOURTH HEAT OF THE SCIERRA WINTER LEAGUE

The fourth qualifying heat for the Scierra Winter League Fly Fishing competition took place on Saturday, 18th November at Annamoe Trout Fishery, Annamoe Co. Wicklow. Anglers were forced to change peg positions every half hour instead of every hour due to the strong winds and cold temperatures. Fly casting was not easy in these conditions and with water temperatures plummeting to 6 degrees, the rainbows were lying low. After four hours of fishing, 16 anglers only landed 8 trout. This is the lowest catch yet in any of the winter leagues held at Annamoe over the last 5 years.

Ironically, after the competition had finished, David Rowan from Naas, Co. Kildare landed 4 fish after having no luck during the competition. The overall winner was local angler, Sean McLoughlin from Rathdrum, Co Wicklow with 2 trout caught with nymphs on a floating line and intermediate leader. Pat Noonan from Tipperary secured second place with 2 trout and third place went to another local angler, Martin O’Hara with 1 trout.

The 5th and final heat of the Scierra Winter League will take place on Saturday 25th November. Please contact Brian Nally, Annamoe Trout Fishery on 0404-45470 to secure your place. Fishing times are 10.30am – 2.30pm (please arrive at 10.00am to draw pegs) The first 4 finishers in each heat will qualify for the grand final.

PLEASE NOTE: the date for the final of the Scierra Winter League has been changed from the 2nd December to the 9th December.

Best of luck to all competing anglers….

……Ends…..
